Poetry Written On Postcards to Royston Arts Group (artist Vivienne Machell)

She stood high in the sand dunes listening to the cry of the gulls and the crash and swoosh of the waves. A movement in the distance caught her eye and she turned to look. A horse was galloping along the beach towards her. She looked for others but it was quite alone –a riderless horse. As it grew level with her it stopped and turned to face her, nostrils flared, sides heaving and flecked with foam. It snorted, then turned and galloped back along the beach, following its own footprints.

She watched until it became a speck, then disappeared. Then she turned and walked on along the dunes.
